Bill Gates: How I’m trying to change the world now (TED)

I finally got around to watching Bill Gates’ recent TED Talk, if you haven’t seen it yet then go watch it now. Gates outlines two of the many problems the world is facing today; malaria & poor education. He speaks about the current issues surrounding these topics and mentions some of the ways that we can solve them.

Some of the key/interesting points I’ve taken away from the education part of the talk were:

  • Over 30% of kids in the US never finish high school
    • Over 50% for kids coming from low-income families
    • Kids from low-income families have a higher chance of going to jail than to college
  • Teachers in the US are rewarded with a pay increase by seniority and if they receive a masters
    • After 3 years teaching a teacher’s teaching methods are set and stop improving
    • There is zero correlation between receiving your masters and being a better teacher
